Museum of Tomorrow, Brazil

Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - For realising the extraordinary museum on time and within budget, PERI planned, produced and delivered over 3,500 customised special formwork elements.
Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - The "Museum of Tomorrow“ was designed by Santiago Calatrava and extends 300 m into the sea on a pier.
Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - Supported by PERI UP shoring and working scaffolds, as well as VARIOKIT raised formwork units, the customised elements are assembled on site to form a complete 3D formwork construction.
Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - The 3D formwork units were pre-assembled with the help of the individual formwork elements produced at the CNC woodworking facility at PERI Brazil.
Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - The use of the 3D formwork elements on the jobsite was similar to that of system formwork – supported by easily implementable utilization plans.
Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - Planning, assembly and material allocation were ideally coordinated to suit the construction schedule.
Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro - An important part of the PERI overall concept was also providing perfectly matched formwork and scaffolding systems.

Project data

Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • Futuristic building with cantilevered roof and facade with moving elements
  • Exhibition area with two storeys connected by inclined ramps
  • Architect/Engineer: Santiago Calatrava

Requirements

  • Length-based, 300 m long structurepositioned on a pier, surrounded by water on three sides
  • In-situ concrete construction with complex design and 3D freeform surfaces
  • Extremely high technical and logistical requirements

Customer

Consorcio Porto Rio: Odebrecht Engenharia, OAS Engenharia, Carioca Engenharia

Customer's benefit

  • Dimensionally accurate realisation of a complex concrete structure
  • Maintaining the planned schedule and within budget due to the high degree of prefabrication
  • Efficient handling of the 3D formwork units, similar to a system formwork

The combination of multiple PERI formwork and scaffolding systems together with efficient engineering support was the key factor in ensuring that the concrete construction challenges we faced could be mastered. In particular, the on-time deliveries of the pre-assembled formwork units enabled us to shape Rio’s newest landmark.

PERI solution

  • Planning, production and delivery of over 3,500 customised project formwork units (28,000 m²) on a system basis in only 13 months
  • International teamwork with 3D planning in Weissenhorn, Germany and formwork assembly in São Paulo, Brazil
  • CNC-produced formwork units from 60,000 m² of chipboard
  • Competent project management for completely structured planning, assembly and material allocation
