How can urban life be combined with nature – especially in a metropolis of millions like Budapest? Architects Hajnal Zsolt and Kendelényi Péter asked themselves this very question when designing a residential building with 513 modern apartments in the heart of the Hungarian capital. The highlight and main feature will be the green façade wall from the fifth to the tenth floor. Covering a total area of 7,000 square meters, plants will not only aesthetically enhance the building, but also improve the microclimate and reduce air pollution. Several studies have already shown that the greening of façades can reduce the outside surface temperature by 15-20°C and the inside temperature by up to 5-8°C.

The renderings for "Metrodom Green" illustrate how the plants surround the building after completion.
The implementation of this green oasis places some special demands on the scaffolding. To realise the vision of a green façade wall, our client MTB Industrial Kft. needed a special solution. For example, the scaffolding cannot be anchored everywhere on the façade due to the steel grid for the plants. In addition, a system is required that can be erected 36 meters high while still being stable and safe for the construction team. "Already in the bidding phase, we have shown that we can deal with precisely such challenges. We have presented solutions and a modern scaffolding system that meets the criteria. And ultimately, our client chose PERI," explains Márk Kenessey, Head of Sales Scaffolding and Project Manager in Budapest.
"For us, ‘Metrodom Green’ is the first modular façade scaffolding project in Hungary. It requires a high degree of technology, and I am proud that we can show what a flexible system we have on the market."

Meeting requirements – with detailed 3D models and a modern scaffolding solution
To master the first major challenge – the anchoring of the façade scaffolding – the Hungarian team received support from Günzburg in Germany. For that, our Product Manager Afif Elbaba knows the façade and modular scaffolding from our PERI UP modular system like no other. "Due to the prefabricated metal beams on almost all vertical surfaces, we were significantly limited with the anchoring options for the scaffolding. So, we developed a solution in which our façade scaffolding is anchored to our modular scaffolding instead of to the wall. This provides the necessary stability and safety for the workers on site”, he explains.
For example, 12,000 square meters of PERI UP façade and 19,000 cubic meters of modular scaffolding are currently being used. They can be flexibly combined with each other, so that different geometries and load requirements can be managed in a simple and cost-effective way. To make this solution possible, our engineers have created detailed 3D models that not only show how much material is needed, but also how and where the scaffolding can be set up and anchored to each other. These visualisations still make a significant contribution to successfully completing the project.
PERI UP scaffolding solution
Since there were hardly any anchoring options due to the green wall, our façade scaffolding was anchored to our modular scaffolding system instead of to the wall.
Stable scaffolding system
Our robust system allows the construction team to work safely on site.
The second big challenge for our client was height. Since the building was to be set up from scratch, a scaffolding was required that could be erected 36 meters high and still be viable. Thanks to its robust construction, our façade scaffolding does just that and, in addition to the load-bearing capacity, also offers side protection for more safety. The efficiency that makes our scaffolding powerful at altitude runs through our entire system. "It’s not only robust and durable, but also lightweight, as only as much material as necessary is used in production. On the construction site, it is our planning tools that help to be efficient. For example, it allows us to manage our scaffolding material wisely and reduce the number of deliveries. And: since this is rental material, it can always be reused," says Afif.
Efficient set-up
The on-site training enables the assembly team to set up our scaffolding even faster.
Easy construction of our scaffolding: on-site training offers valuable support
Since our modular façade scaffolding is being used for the first time in Hungary, the conversion to a new system also represents a new challenge for the assembly team. The well-rehearsed team, which had been working with another system for years, now had to switch to the new system. But thanks to the easy assembly, the team managed to quickly build up our scaffolding. "In order for our client MTB to feel well taken care of, we have offered additional support in the form of on-site training," says Afif. This allowed the assembly team to set up the scaffolding even more efficiently, speeding up the entire construction process.
These advantages eventually led MTB to think about a system change. "Since our client is convinced of our scaffolding system and wanted to learn more about production, we invited him to our plant in Günzburg. This was not only important to our client, but also to us. In this way, we were able to show that we use robots for production and, with strict quality controls, ensure that the material arrives in Hungary without defects," says our scaffolding expert. As such, the "Metrodom Green" project serves as a kind of rehearsal for the upcoming system change of our client.
"It’s inspiring to be on site and support with our scaffolding solution from planning to execution and to help a good partnership to succeed."

Even though the project is still in full swing, our Hungarian team has already received positive feedback. Both our client and the scaffolding company were appreciative of the scaffolding solution and project support. "In particular, they emphasised the quality and safety of the scaffolding material, the continuous support of the construction site and the well-thought-out 3D designs that were tailored to the special requirements of the project," says Márk. This makes the "Metrodom Green" project an example of how modern, robust and durable scaffolding technology can be combined with sustainable architectural solutions. "Our scaffolding system is used over a total period of 13 months and makes a significant contribution to an efficient construction process. In a second phase, we can once again prove that our scaffolding is reliable and efficient at a comparable scale," says Márk.
