The 35 km long Hongkong-Zhuhai- Macao road connection is located in the area of the approach flight path of the Hong Kong International Airport, Chek Lap Kok, in an underwater tunnel. This 6 km long immersed tunnel had already been successfully built with PERI know-how – the shell construction for the east and west transitional structures was the next stage to be completed. For this, two artificial islands were created in the southern Chinese Pearl River Delta. 6 lanes lead into the two tunnel portals with a 3 % longitudinal gradient.

PERI played a decisive role in realizing this once-in-a-century structure; tunnel entrances and breakwater were extremely challenging due to maintaining the highest quality requirements. The formwork could be easily moved and provided the best possible safety and first-class architectural concrete quality. We came to appreciate the professional engineering, service and the striving of the PERI engineers for perfection.
