Dinnington Sewage Treatment Works, Nottinghamshire

In Nottinghamshire, North Midlands Construction Plc was awarded a £440,000 contract to carry out improvements to the Dinnington sewage treatment works as part of Severn Trent Water’s £1million-a-day investment in tap water and river quality.
Sub-contractor, Reinforced Structures, were employed to carry out the structural work that involved the construction of two Final Settlement Tanks (FST’s) and a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) tank.
Reinforced Structures Proprietor, Dave Johnson, chose to have the RUNDFLEX circular wall formwork for the 19m diameter Final Settlement Tanks pre-fabricated by skilled craftsmen at the PERI fabrication workshop in Rugby. This not only lead to a high quality, accurate finish but also allowed the formwork to be incorporated with special, suspended radius channel shutters. As a result, each quarter segment of the FST´s could be cast by a monolithic pour delivering 35m3 of concrete and a turnaround period of just three days.
The BNR tank was divided up into eleven pours for which PERI supplied a set of standard VARIO wall formwork panels that could be configured in various arrangements. Each cast was achieved in a four day period, working out at an impressive 2.6m² of concrete face per man hour. Throughout the project, a high degree of communication was maintained between PERI and the contractor. Above all, this was an overwhelming factor in the project attaining a timely completion in a smooth and efficient manner.
