“Blue Heaven” Hotel in Frankfurt am Main
Formwork concept allowed four-day cycle for standard floors
The “Blue Heaven” hotel development provides the Frankfurt skyline with yet another eye-catcher and represents a stunning centre of attraction for visitors to this modern and vibrant city. Complete with 19 storeys, it rises to a height of 87 m and the striking silhouette of the hotel – designed as a glass cube held in a shining blue disc – is a very impressive sight. The building was designed by John Seifert Architects and is being constructed by HTP & Groß Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH in the western part of downtown Frankfurt. The 4-star hotel with 440 guest rooms will be operated by Radisson SAS Hotel & Resorts. The official opening is planned for 2005.
PERI was commissioned to carry out the formwork planning for a two-level basement, a 15 m high base construction, an extremely complicated support structure, 15 standard storeys as well as three specially designed floors. For the main contractors, Bilfinger Berger AG (Frankfurt subsidiary), a crucial factor in awarding the contract was the customised and detailed formwork concept developed by PERI engineers. This played a decisive part in ensuring that the aforementioned construction plans could be completed within the very ambitious dead-line of only ten months.
The PERI formwork solution ensured optimized construction progress and allowed completion of each 1,200 m² storey in only four days. This short concreting cycle was made possible by the skilful choice and combination of suitable systems and through consistent utilisation of the advantages of each. TRIO TSE 330 shaft elements, for example, saved the contractors a considerable amount of time when forming the elevator cores and shafts. The core and shaft walls could be efficiently formed and concreted - two floors simultaneously, with concreting heights of 6.60 m until second storey. PERI''s TSE elements allowed the approx. 7 t heavy inner wall formwork to be quickly and easily moved without the need for dismantling.

For constructing the regular floors, from the second through to the sixteenth storey, the carefully selected system combination for forming the slabs brought appreciable time advantages. 8.50 m x 3.75 m special slab tables for the edge areas and PERI SKYDECK lightweight aluminium panel slab formwork were used to close the remainder. The approx. 32 m² (!) large slab tables were designed by PERI engineers to exactly match the dimensional requirements, and were assembled by site crews using only system parts out of the PERI programme. The tables used to form the edges were placed in a cantilever position and furnished with 2.00 m high guardrail protection. From the second storey on combined with a screen protection. The size of the tables and the possibility of not having to dismantle the guardrails when moving greatly contributed to speeding up construction work. The screen protection for the cantilevered tables ensured safe and ultimately more productive working at all heights. |

Through the customisation of the slab tables, this meant that the remaining area could be closed using PERI SKYDECK system elements without the need for any time-consuming filler work. The repetitive SKYDECK assembly sequence with props, main beams and panels was quickly mastered so that construction crews could achieve the best shuttering times. After a very short introductory phase, the planned four-day concreting cycle for completion of each standard storey was accomplished. |

Construction of the circular wing walls was carried out using a PERI TRIO climbing formwork solution whilst PERI TRIO structure panel formwork and CB 240 climbing scaffold were used for the architectural concrete. One distinctive feature here was the extended external wall formwork which simultaneously served as the bulkhead for the slab. The possibility of moving the climbing units (formwork and scaffold) in one lift also saved time and crane capacity. |

The experienced Bilfinger Berger team was very satisfied with the services provided by the PERI engineers. Apart from the excellent cooperation, the skilfully selected system utilisation and well-developed formwork concept came in for special praise which likewise contributed to streamlining the construction work. |
