Newport Campus, Newport
PERI construct new academic home for University of Wales
Willmott Dixon will create another landmark on the banks of the River Usk in Newport after securing the £ 35 million contract to build the new City Centre Campus for the University of Wales, Newport. The campus, which will be the first phase of an intended £ 50 million development for the University with partnership funding from Newport City Council, the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport Unlimited.
With completion set for November 2010, the City Centre Campus is a collaboration between the University, Newport City Council and Newport Unlimited, the urban regeneration company for the city, and will be home to two academic schools; the Newport Business School and the digital media, film and design elements of Newport School of Art, Media and Design. The campus will be comprised of four lecture theatres, gallery space, library information services, study spaces, seminar rooms, restaurant facilities, an academic ‘hot-house’ for research and roof top board room.
Thames Valley Construction were the chosen concrete frame contractor by Willmott Dixon and from many previous successful projects, came to PERI once again to source their formwork and falsework solutions. With a technically challenging frame to construct Thames Valley chose PERI’s MULTIPROP system which enabled quick and safe erection of props and GT 24 girder formwork up to a height of 10 m, also encompassing large cantilevers, varying angles and changes in shape to the slab edge.
Along with this, certain entrance areas to the campus were to have an architectural finish to them which required PERI’s technical team to accommodate this requirement with uniform tie holes and plywood joints.
