Stetten Environmental Tunnel, Vienna, Austria
Efficient work operations in weekly cycles
The 3.2 km long Stetten environmental tunnel is part of the new S1 expressway located in the northern district of Vienna. It was constructed using the cut-and-cover method, two thirds of which as closed, double tube rectangular cross-section and one third with laterally-positioned open gallery. In close co-operation with the site management, PERI engineers developed a costeffective tunnel formwork solution for the semi-monolithic construction, adapted to the individual requirements.
Comprehensive engineering efforts and the use of system components resulted in efficient moving procedures and optimized working operations: two formwork carriages for the centre wall constructed in advance and five tunnel formwork carriages for the subsequent construction of the slabs and external walls in one pour guaranteed trouble-free and crane-independent realization of the 150 concreting sections in regular weekly cycles. The PERI solution also included a fast mobile moving procedure for the external wall formwork without the need of a crane.
Standardised, rentable components from the VARIOKIT engineering construction kit provided the ideal basis for this. On the one hand, the time and expense required for producing special parts could be minimized whilst, on the other, the supporting formwork and the equipment with hydraulic components could be optimally adapted to the site conditions.
