Galileo Satellite Control Centre, Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany
The leaning tower of Galileo Accurately and efficently formed
The control centre of the European satellite navigation system, Galileo, which is currently under construction has a range of both technical and optical special features. Then this extraordinary architectural concrete structure includes three inclined reinforced concrete towers positioned in the elaborately arranged external walls which carry the hall slab at a height of nine metres. These towers symbolize over-sized telescopes which observe satellites in outer space. The top view shows a number of parabolic-shaped vertical openings which serve as entrances in the lower tower sections and as a light source in the upper areas.
The ground plan shows the tower supports in the shape of an arch profile – a cross-sectional form comprising of different radii – which extend with different inclinations. For their likewise accurate and cost-effective construction, the formwork and scaffolding specialist, PERI, created customized formwork elements on the basis of the VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork system. The building geometry from the architect was prepared by PERI engineers so that the cut and assembly of the individual formwork bodies could take place problem-free right down to the last millimetre. PERI supplied the ready-to-use, pre-assembled 3D formwork units to the construction site in order to achieve the required high level of form and surface qualities in spite of being put under tremendous pressure from the beginning onwards due to the very tight deadlines
A concreting cycle height of 1.62 m was selected so that anchoring for the elements could take place outside of the concreting section. For the plywood formlining, the large-area PERI Fin Ply Maxi ensured that the number of joints could be kept to a minimum. Even the smallest radii down to 35 centimetres could be constructed tidily and problem-free. The VARIO customized elements could be handled on site similar to that of a system formwork. Thus, the complete internal formwork could be erected by only three men in the space of one hour - with extraordinary precision in all climbing sections.
The external walls were constructed using VARIO formwork elements with pre-determined joint and tie arrangement. The plywood formlining joints were accurately bevelled at the PERI assembly facilities and resulted in perfectly aligned, parallel-positioned triangular-shaped pilaster strips in the concrete finish. The suspension points for the KG 180 climbing brackets could be integrated into the anchor points of the wall formwork so that no additional flaws appeared in the concrete surface. PERI engineers also planned and supplied the formwork solution for the 3.75 metre long window recesses with angled reveals which were to be used a number of times during the construction work. Only eight box-outs were required for ensuring very accurate construction of altogether 59 openings.
The Berlin-based Architektenteam Schultes, who had masterminded the design and construction of the Federal Chancellery likewise with PERI know-how, were also totally convinced of the high quality finish of the concrete surfaces. This quality is due to the experience as well as positive co-operation of everyone involved. Because good architectural concrete is always a result of excellent teamwork involving architect, structural engineer, the contractor along with the formwork crews as well as formwork specialists and concrete supplier.
