Rosca-Konscica A1 Motorway Tunnel, Split, Croatia
Various tunnel cross-sections formed with system components
Croatia is in the process of gradually expanding its network of trunk roads. For the most southern - around 200 km long - section of the A1 motorway between Split and Dubrovnik several engineering structures had to be realized. To the east of Split, the route goes through tunnels at two points. Both animal overpass structures have a lengths of 150 m and were constructed at the same time using the cut-and-cover method. In both cases, PERI engineers developed a tunnel formwork solution with PERI UP and VARIO system components.
For the twin-tube Rosca Tunnel, with crosssections featuring 12.50 m diameters and 8.60 m headroom, the middle wall section was concreted first using VARIO special elements. Subsequently, two tunnel formwork carriages were used in order to be able to construct the arched slabs and external wall in 10 m casting segments in one pour each time. PERI UP framework units in a 1.50 m x 1.50 m basic grid arrangement, as well as an additional frame, formed the load-carrying system for the polygonally-arranged VARIO formwork. An intermediate level comprising of steel walers served as horizontal re-shoring with anchorage on the middle wall as well as for fixing the lateral formwork unit. Construction of both tunnel tubes was carried out in weekly cycles.
The Konscica Tunnel was designed as a simple arched cross-section with a 31 m width. The load-carrying construction, also consisting of PERI UP framework units, was divided into three sections for moving. As was the case for the Rosca Tunnel, the moving procedure to the next cycle was carried out by means of cable winches. For each of the 15 m long concreting steps, site crews only needed 10 days.

Managing Director
“With PERI, we found a very competent partner. We worked together to fi nd the right solution which we can also use in future tunnel and bridge construction projects. Together with my team, we´ve been working with scaffold systems for 15 years - however PERI UP is the best that we´ve ever used.”
