Modular VARIOKIT composite formwork carriage: cost-effective and flexible
The 86 km long R48 express highway is a heavily-used connection between the Czech D1 motorway and the Polish border, and also links the cities of Prague and Krakow with each other. In the eastern part of the Czech Republic, south of Ostrava, one of the last sections was developed as a four lane motorway with a length of around
7 km. This included a 720 m long steel composite bridge, one of the longest in the country. For this, PERI supplied two rentable composite formwork carriages made with components taken from the new VARIOKIT construction set.
The VARIOKIT steel composite carriage consists of three main components: formwork units, cross frames and two longitudinal trusses.
The formwork units, complete with plywood formliners, carry the weight of the fresh concrete for the carriageway slab and transfer the loads via spindles and tension rods to the cross-frames. The cross-frames are formed with components taken from the VARIOKIT system and offer flexible connecting possibilities for steel walers, scaffold tubes, heavy-duty spindles and tie rods due to the continuous row of holes. Longitudinal bracing is carried out by means of trusses from the HD 200 system which means loads up to 600 kN can be safely transferred through the bearing point into the main members of the bridge.
In the centre of the bridge, the strut axes open out from 6.50 m to 9.00 m. The modular VARIOKIT construction system could be adapted to the various main beam spacings without any problems. The cantilevered slab inclination along with the height of the formworkcould be adjusted using two spindles positioned on each cantilever side. A third spindle served to swivel the complete formwork unit so that not only could longitudinal girder width extensions be circumvented but also steel structure tolerances were able to be compensated at any time.

“The erection of steel composite bridges is considerably easier and much faster with the PERI formwork carriage construction.”
